About Dave

Dave Lane Profile PicDave Lane is a Councillor at Large in St. John's, and is focused primarily on economic development, public engagement, supporting startups and small businesses, improving cycling, strengthening arts support, and protecting built heritage.

He has worked in web development, marketing, and communications since 1998, earning a joint degree in Computer Science and Business Commerce from Memorial University in 2005. He was a Business Analyst and Web Developer at local tech firm groupzed, and later Development Partner at local marketing firm Dc Design House.

Today, aside from his role on Council, Dave leads a significant project in partnership with Common Ground Coworking to adapt several historic downtown buildings into a “creative innovation hub” for entrepreneurs, artists and other self-starters.

Prior to being elected to Council in 2013, Dave chaired Happy City St. John's, a group of dedicated volunteers focused on public engagement at the municipal level. He continues this work as chair of Council’s Economic Development, Tourism, and Public Engagement standing committee, driving forward the City’s new Public Engagement Framework and Strategic Economic Roadmap 2021 initiative.

Dave, Hedi and AnnieDave is currently the Council representative on the St. John’s Food Policy Council, Clean St. John’s, and Downtown St. John’s. He has also co-chair of the City’s Downtown Advisory Committee, and has been Council’s representative on the Bike St. John’s Task Force and Water Street Refresh Project, also known as the “Big Dig Committee” which was made up of downtown business representatives, City staff, and the project’s engineering consultant.

Dave has served on the boards and committees of the Newfoundland Historic Trust, the St. John’s Board of Trade, and the St. John's Northwest Rotary Music Festival, to name a few.

Dave Celebrates Choral WinHe is also a musician, having spent years singing in successful choral groups Quintessential Vocal Ensemble (QVE), Newman Sound Men's Choir, and Innismara Vocal Ensemble. He was the first drummer for local rock bands Hey Rosetta! and Pilot to Bombardier, and played with Jazz East Big Band for several years.

Dave lives with his wife, Hedi, their dog, Annie, and their two cats Isaac and Barbara.
