July 25, 2013 (St. John’s, NL) – Dave Lane, candidate for councillor at large in St. John’s, is proud to be attending the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Technology Industries (NATI) Summer Barbecue today, where an important announcement will be made regarding Startup St. John’s shared workspace initiative, Common Ground.
“I absolutely love the idea of a mini “Silicon Valley” in my hometown of St. John’s,” said Lane. “The work being done by the NATI-supported Startup St. John’s is a strong investment in our sustainable future, and I think it’s important to spread that message.”
Lane has been promoting the idea of a “smarter St. John’s” throughout his municipal campaign, and through his years as founding chair of Happy City St. John’s. As an IT professional himself, Lane has been connecting with businesses to find solutions to problems using technology and collaboration.
“The Common Ground workspace announced today is a major development in our city,” said Lane. “Creating a space where enthusiastic entrepreneurs can come together on small budgets to share ideas and develop new products and services is a giant leap towards a sustainable economy, and helps to create an attractive place for new investment.”
The IT sector in Newfoundland and Labrador is one of the largest contributors to the province’s economy, and is also one of the most sustainable industries to develop. Work done by IT professionals and startups in St. John’s can be exported around the globe - while the people can continue to live and work in the city.
“St. John’s - the city we all love - is at a turning point in its history, and we have to take this opportunity to prepare for the future,” said Lane. “Organizations such as NATI and Startup St. John’s are doing extremely important work to stimulate small business growth in the IT sector of our city and province. I’m proud to be a part of this movement.”
